🌃 Located to the north-east of the city's historic centre, the Orangerie takes its name from the famous park where families, sports enthusiasts and the curious meet up every day... It's a real place to live and meet, a stone's throw from embassies, European institutions and luxury residences. It took less than a century for the park to expand and become what it is today. In 1895, as part of the Universal Exhibition and to cement its prestige, Germany undertook to enlarge Strasbourg with the "Neustadt". As part of this undertaking, the German Empire decided to create a huge area of greenery. Around the Josephine pavilion, an artificial lake and a waterfall were created, much to the delight of the inhabitants. The Parc de l'Orangerie was born. Such was its importance that it eventually gave its name to Strasbourg's most famous district. The Orangerie district also includes the Quartier des Quinze, which owes its name to the Council of the same name that governed the city from 1433 to the Revolution. Today, only three orange trees remain in the park. The Josephine pavilion still exists. It is regularly privatised and used for a variety of cultural events. At twenty-six hectares, the Parc de l'Orangerie is the largest green space in the Alsatian capital. The University botanical garden is home to no fewer than 5,000 species of plants spread over more than three hectares.
A few steps from the park are the major European buildings: the Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights.
The district is also famous for its many bourgeois villas inspired by the German Renaissance. It is also home to many international embassies. The reputation of the Orangerie district has been forged by the beauty of its buildings and the peaceful atmosphere of its streets.
