Holiday homes with breathtaking views

Kefalonia and its homes in the several beaches of the island is what you have been waiting for all year long. Relax in luxurious homes with private pools near the vibrant beach of Skala at the southern tip of the island or near the paradisiac Makris Gialos beach in the southern east. Moving up to the north, in the lovely town of Fiskardo, modern homes, shabby apartments and charming cottages with all amenities immersed in the green landscapes are waiting for you!

Discover the variegated homes in the picturesque island of Kefalonia

The largest island in the Ionian sea has luxurious, elegant and modern homes with amazing views of the deep blue waters where to stay during a holiday. The holiday homes are mostly renovated villas with lovely, flowerful gardens and large pools. Some of the homes are located at the hilltop offering a grandiose view of the Ionian landscape form their terraces or verandas where it is possible, for sure, to enjoy a fancy or homemade dinner for two. Do you like a more homey vibe and small rustic homes? There also several small stone-cutted and pastel-coloured villas immersed in the peaceful green where you can deeply relax with your family or friends.

Holidays in Kefalonia

The area and getting around

Explore the hiking trails in the most beautiful of the Greek islands

Kefalonia is famous for its majestic beaches, but also for its marvellous mountains rising directly from the sea. The tallest mountain of the Ionian island is Mount Ainos located in the south, also called Foresta Nera due to its dark Kefalonian Fir trees. The hiking trail might be a little difficult, but the view will take your breath away: worth it! For a moderate-level hike discover the mountain of Kalon Oros at a height of 901 meters in the north-west of the island.

Discover the majestic beaches of the island

There are 4 stunning beaches that you cannot miss: Myrtos, Petani, Xi and Skala. Deep blue, all vibrant, surrounded by green landscapes and by high and sheer cliffs. If you feel adventurous you should head north-east and visit Petani beach, which, due to the steep cliffs, it has much larger waves than the others. Whilst Xi beach is a perfect place to relax with your family thanks to the shallow waters and the gentle waves. Move towards the North and have a nice swim at the beach of Myrtos, one of the top 30 best beaches in the world or have a walk in the longest sandy beach of the island. Visit Skala beach to discover the south of this characteristic island. For a change of scenery, explore the caraibic waters of Zante and Ithaca, they are just one boat ride distant!

Travelers and activities

Kefalonia for a family holiday

Most of the Kefalonian beaches are kid-friendly because of the calm and shallow waters. Do not miss Assos, Lepeda and Vatsa! Take the little ones at the Kefalonia Horse Riding stables to enjoy a horse ride, to visit the lovely town of Argostoli with its beautiful harbour where you can see loggerhead sea turtles in the morning. You could also head to the special festivals of Saristra and Traverso or you could visit the lovely Karavomylos lake and feed the ducks and geese with your children. A boat ride in these crystal-clear waters could, of course, also be a good idea!

Kefalonia for adrenaline lovers

Get a taste of extreme caving excursions climbing the canyons or abseils in the Drogati or Agalaki cave or give a try to adventurous scuba divings in the deep waters of the Melissani cave. Incredible experiences along with breathtaking and impressive views! To enjoy a moderate or low level of adrenaline you could be renting a boat or a kayak to explore the beaches and the coastline. There are also several walking trails here to discover: Agia Efimia and Fanari for example.

It is believed that the Melissani cave was the very spot where one of the Nymphs, Melissanthi, drowned after being rejected by the god Pan!

Top 5 travel tips in Kefalonia

1. The gem of Kefalonia: Fiskardo

Many of the villages in the island were destroyed in the 1953 earthquake, but the former fishing village of Fiskardo is one of the few that has survived and will transport you back in time. The village has preserved its traditional coloured buildings and a must experience when visiting the village is having a walk at sunset along the main coastal road brimming with fine restaurants and taverns. Don't forget about the walking trail to the lighthouse... magic!

2. An awe-inspiring cave

You cannot miss one of the most incredible sights of the island: the Melissani cave! It was opened to the public in 1963 and is located at about 2 meters away from the town of Sami. It would be better to visit on sunny days because it is possible to see the rays of sun shining down the roof. A memorable sight and great experience.

3. An ancient beauty, the Castle of Agios Georgios

The Venetian style castle, once the capital of Kefalonia, was probably built around the 12th century by the Byzantine emperors. Although the castle has been damaged by the earthquake, some of the walls have been preserved and can be viewed. Be careful when visiting the castle outside summer because it might be closed. Make sure to check the opening hours!

4. Don’t miss a regenerating hike at Mt. Ainos National Park

The national park is the island’s more precious reserve and the heart of the Kefalonia biodiversity. There at least 5 different hiking trails and here are some of them: the Vlachata, the Digaleto, the Kissos, with a different level of difficulty along with wonderful views. The Greek legends are usually related to places, indeed the highest peak of Mount Ainos used to be a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, the king of the goods!

5. Robola wine, the golden coloured wine

It is a typical wine of the island produced from grapes grown on the slopes of Mount Aenos. It is a fruity wine which characteristic taste is given form the mix of citrus, peach, apple and lime. For a complete experience, take a tour at the Robola Cooperative.
