The area and getting around

An idyllic beach destination

Looking for the best island? Sitting in the Atlantic ocean, Fuerteventura is the second largest of all the Canary Islands. Not far from the African coast, the gentle breeze gives the island warm temperatures all year round. Explore its unspoilt coastline and relax in sheltered coves. The scenery changes as you travel around the island. Long golden sandy beaches, rolling sand dunes and rugged mountains that offer magnificent views.

Gastronomy and traditional cuisineFresh, varied and simple dishes to sample. Local fish, luscious seafood by the harbour in Corralejo or traditional goat cheese, chorizo, gofio or tapas. The offer will delight fans of gastronomic tourism. Immerse yourself into the “majorera” gastronomy by eating “la vieja” , a tender and delicate, tasty white meat fish that stands out for its unique flavour.

Travelers and activities

A destination for paradise lovers

Although sunbathing on the island’s endless beaches sounds appealing, Fuerteventura gathers hundreds of water sports enthusiasts too. It will test the most intrepid and daring souls. Kitesurfing, diving, snorkelling, windsurfing or surfing. Defy and ride the waves or explore the marine underworld. Unleash your adventurous spirit. A bit too much action? Wander around the open-air museum of Poblado de la Atalayita, see the aboriginal archaeological excavated fragments at Museo Arqueológico de Betancúria or discover how traditional Canarian families lived and worked decades ago at Ecomuseo La Alcogida. Would you prefer to enjoy a ride at your own pace? Explore the island by hire car. The island is only 60 miles long and 18 miles wide. Tick off every corner. Drive around to discover the most impressive beaches, visit former fishing villages and enjoy the views of dormant volcanoes and high cliffs. Need a day out? Take the ferry from Corralejo for a day trip to Isla de Lobos

Fuerteventura’s first inhabitants are called majoreros, a name that originates from their goat skin footwear.
