In addition, Orihuela is the hometown of the famous Spanish poet, Miguel Hernández, where his house has now been turned into a museum and it is definitely worth a visit. If you love poetry, this route takes you through the historic quarter and focuses on the life of Orihuela-born poet Miguel Hernández. The route starts at the Fernando de Loazes’ public library, which houses the historical archives and where you can discover the poet’s work and career. The delicious fresh fish and seafood, and local produce grown in the fertile floodplains of the Segura River are evident in Orihuela’s delicious traditional rice dishes. The most popular are seafood paella and arroz con costra or crusty rice, which is baked in the oven with a crust of beaten egg and longaniza sausage. You can also try chickpea stew with meatballs, pepitoria-style chicken, potato omelette with vegetables and spiced pork sausage, migas with chocolate, cantaloupe and grapes, and stewed beans. The festival of the Reconquest of the Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians) festival takes place in July every year, when the streets of the historic quarter come alive with the colour and noise of various processions and events. A highlight of the programme is the Grand Parade in which the locals, dressed in costumes, commemorate the battles to control the land between the Moors and Christians. Relive history like never before!

Well worth a visit are the local flea markets, which offer visitors a colourful variety of goods. Two beachside markets include Flamenca Beach, one of the largest in the region held every Saturday, and Aguamarina Beach, held every Thursday. Their food stalls are very popular and sell typical regional products. Other highlights include its traditional sweet stalls and other stalls selling clothes, shoes, bags, etc. When you grow tired of walking around, you can sit down and have breakfast or lunch at one of the bars or terraces!

Put your foot forward and get away from the beaches and resorts for a while if you want to enjoy the area at your own pace. Fresh air filling your lungs and stunning views along the Coastal Pathway where you can choose from five different routes: Dehesa de Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Zenia, Playa Flamenca o Punta Prima. You can either walk it in one go from Campoamor to Punta Prima or do little sections of it.
