Usually when people think of Spanish beaches, they imagine the Costa Blanca or Costa del Sol in the east or south of the country. But few people know that many of the most beautiful beaches in Spain are located in the north, in the Bay of Bizcay. The most renowned route here is the Camino de Santiago, where you can hike through some of the north’s most magnificent natural scenery and explore quaint villages and towns along the way. As a quieter alternative to the Pyrenees, the Picos de Europa in Asturias are a superb setting for hiking and climbing, wildflower-spotting and bird-watching, or even just a scenic drive.

Northern Spain has fewer tourists than the busy south and east, and is an easy place to take your family. For smaller children, northern Spain offers an abundance of playgrounds. Even in smaller towns or villages you will find a playground that will keep even the most active children busy for a while. The urban beaches are well equipped and safe. The bay of Santander offers some of the best conditions for children (and their parents!) – protected against the wind and high waves, it offers calm, clear waters, lifeguards, perfectly clean sand, and easy access to the city’s shops and restaurants.

Located in San Sebastian, Playa de la Concha has been recognized as one of the most beautiful urban beaches in the world. Its iconic shell shaped bay gives it the name Concha, meaning shell in Spanish. Spend an afternoon in the elegant white Perla spa centre half-way down the beach and be pampered as you luxuriate in the resplendent views across the bay.
