Nerja is situated at the far western part of the Costa del Sol, right on the Mediterranean coast. The main tourist beach of Nerja, Burriana, features several playgrounds on the beach itself, next to cafes so that parents can sit and enjoy their Spanish coffee while watching their kids play safely. Well known for its artisan ice cream, Nerja has many homemade ice cream outlets which can be enough persuasion to encourage kids to leave the beach! Dotted around the town itself are a number of well-maintained playgrounds, and the Spanish people love to see children out with adults, so taking your family to restaurants is always a positive experience.

Nerja offers a huge range of watersports including paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, jet skiing and paddle boats. The diving at Nerja is excellent, and several diving schools are available to take you on memorable trips no matter your level of experience or expertise. If you have the cash to splash, cruising yachts can be chartered either with a captain or bareboat, allowing you to explore the coast more extensively and discover the delightful beaches only accessible from the sea.

Nerja is famous for its plethora of beautiful independent boutiques. Specialities are leather goods, many handmade by local artisans, and the gorgeous colourful ceramics. Nerja boasts an excellent range of clothing boutiques, with strong influences from nearby Morocco as well as further afield in Africa, and more European styles and designs. Look out for Nerja’s jewellery stores – there are many – each with a different speciality and focus.

Just between Nerja town and the next village of Maro lie the world-renowned Nerja caves, where you’ll find the world’s tallest natural pillar as well as astonishing natural cave formations.

One of the most photographed – and prettiest – places in Nerja is the Balcon de Europa, with soaring white arches, colourful flowers and a scintillating view of the sea beyond.

Head away from the town centre into the quaint town streets beyond to find traditional Spanish tapas bars and restaurants. Bar Redondo is the local’s favourite, with great quality at reasonable prices.

Just off the Balcon de Europa is the 17th Century El Salvador Church. Don’t miss the colourful tiles on the front, one of which depicts the history of the church.

This popular tourist train takes visitors on a guided trip of Nerja, on a journey past the main sights from Plaza Cavana to Plaza Fabrica. It is a great way to orientate yourself around Nerja!

Nerja’s Sunday Rastro is located near urbanisation Almijara II. Here you’ll find the local farmers’ offerings of freshly picked mangos and avocados, and a vast range of second hand clothing, books, toys and bric-a-brac.

Frigiliana, a village just half an hour’s bus ride from Nerja, is considered to be the most attractive in the region. With its white buildings and geranium covered houses, it makes for a great compliment to you seaside holiday in this gorgeous part of the world.
