The village of Casares is a gorgeous Andalusian whitewashed village perched high on a mountain top, replete with winding narrow streets that afford panoramic views down to the Mediterranean Sea and Moroccan coastline beyond. Casares is located in the western region of the Costa del Sol, half an hour’s drive north of the popular coastal resort of Estepona. Most people arrive via Malaga airport, one hour’s drive away. The village is firmly off the beaten track and remains one of Andalucia’s best kept secrets.

Another great feature of Casares is that it is still just 15 minutes from the coast and easily accessible from the major resorts. The nearest beaches are those in Casares bay. They are of an exceptional standard, kept clean and boast all the necessary facilities for a great family day out. Some have been awarded blue-flag status for excellence. La Chullera is considered the finest beach in the area, with golden sand, a beautifully landscaped promenade and fantastic beach bars.

Being in a protected area, there are many nature walks around the village of Casares where you can explore the surrounding countryside and see the local wildlife in their natural habitat. The best hike from Casares is to the mountains of Sierra Crestellina looming high above the village. Climb the 700 meters to its rocky peaks for stunning views of the Rock of Gibraltar, Casares, and the Mediterranean Sea. This route is suitable for hikers of all ages and experience.

Savour a wonderful dinner in one of the many restaurants in and around Casares. With everything from fine dining to reformed and traditional country ventas and chiringuitos (beach restaurants) on the seafront, Casares has it all. Don’t miss Arroyo Hondo, located just outside the village. Described as “reliably fabulous”, the setting is fantastic, the staff are wonderful, and the fusion food is pure melt in the mouth.

Finca Cortes is one of the finest golf courses in Andalucia and is located just outside Casares. It is a luxury golf resort with a challenging course that has hosted many top international tournaments.

Plaza de España is the main square and home to the finest cafes in the village. From the square, stroll up to the beautiful 17th Century Iglesia de San Sebastian, then continue along the atmospheric and historic Calle Villa. This leads you to Hermitage of Vera Cruz, which affords the best views over the village.

Located 15 minutes’ drive south from Caseres, these baths draw families who picnic on the surrounding grass under the shade of eucalyptus trees while the children frolic in the cool waters. A great place to spend a hot summer afternoon!

Just 15 minutes from Casares, Puerto de la Duquesa offers myriad restaurants, cosy bars and cafes overlooking a fine harbour. A lovely place both to eat, drink and take a relaxing stroll. Bustling and vibrant in summer, in the off-season a gentle calm descends on the marina.

Held in early September, the celebrations include a flamenco show and procession accompanied by feria queens. A competition is then held to see which local farmer has cultivated the largest bunch of grapes. As always in Spain, the music and dancing goes on till the early hours!
